Basildon Community Resource Centre opened its doors to the public in November 1983. It was originally called The Unemployed Workers Centre, but changed its name in 1996 and then became a registered charity in 2000.
Operating under charity law, the Centre is a non profit making organisation providing assistance to people in the Basildon Borough which includes Laindon, Vange, Pitsea, Langdon Hills, Wickford and Billericay. Our Charity registration number is 1082442.
The two storey building is on the outskirts of Basildon town centre (a steady walk of five minutes from train and bus stations). Our building comprises of reception area, drop in and interview areas, two offices, storage rooms, Café servery, kitchen and pantry on ground floor and three large rooms on first floor.
The building is a Potten A frame structure and with its iconic green roof has, over the years, become a bit of a geographical beacon locally. Ask any taxi driver or local resident and they will tell you we are 'The Roof on The Gore', The Toblerone, the Wigwam or 'The Green Triangle'!
In 2008 the Centre celebrated twenty five years of service. During 2013 the Centre completed 30 years service to the local community.
The Centre management team, staff and volunteers are steered by a Management Trustee Board of members consisting of individuals all possessing sound and strong connections within the borough.
We have five staff :
The staff are all trained and have expertise in their work related roles and the Centre also relies on help from a bank of willing volunteers. Currently there are five staff and six regular volunteers.
Our open door policy ensures we offer an holistic approach to clients and we have a basic code of conduct visitors are asked to abide by. We operate within an equal opportunities framework and have full disabled access and facilities on the ground floor and a hearing induction loop system through out the building.
Primarily our work involves helping individuals and families seeking accommodation, benefit entitlement and guidance, form filling, signposting, free loan of books via our own library, loan of smart clothes from our suit bank, café, and access to emergency food and toiletries when in crisis.
The Centre has the recognised Quality Mark for general help via Legal Services Commission. In July 2004, the Centre won the Basildon Business Award under the Community Section. During 2005 the Centre also won an award in the Public Sector category of the Essex Countywide awards, beating over 600 other entrants. In 2011 the Centre received recognition from Rotary International for outstanding service to our local community.
The Centre is well established and is highly regarded within the borough with most statutory agencies using our services for their clients. Social Services, the local Borough and County Councils, Essex Probation, Police, Churches, Samaritans, Family Mosaic and Youth Organisations all refer to the Centre when they have clients in need.
